Southern Draw Firethorn Toro Review

Southern Draw Firethorn Toro Cigar Review

10/22/2022

Southern Draw is totally new to me.  I think the Robert Holt brand has only been around a decade or so and aims to promote southern culture and promote recognition you our dedicated servicemen, which he is a veteran.  Sounds all good to me.

This one is a Habano Rosado wrapper which is supposedly double fermented.  Mexican San Andres binder with Nicaraguan fillers, sounds like a very flavorful combination.  Also, I didn't mention AJ Fernandez helped put this together.  Everything sounds like a winner.

Price ain't cheap, but a reasonable price around $8 - $10.

I usually age my cigars a few months before smoking. But this one has only 2 weeks time in my humidor, bought from a 15 pack sampler.

First few puffs seem a little dry, decent draw.  Been drinking some George Dickel Rye whiskey which is strong and sweet, chased down with coke.  This should go well with this one on a great Saturday night for smoking. 54 degrees out and got my small fire going.

Almost an inch burned and smoothing out, burning perfect, easy draw, lots of smoke.  Hasn't developed much. Picking up slight caramel and some toasted fruit tastes.

Took another shot of the Rye whiskey, pretty strong and powerful in sweet flavors.  Back to the cigar, dropped the ash with some strong pulls.  Has a very slight cone.  It burning pretty quick.  Easy draw and pulls a lot smoke, still smooth, adding cream soda taste.  Now tasting some cedar on the tongue.  Great aftertaste on top of my liquor flavored palate.

Still a little dry tasting.  Maybe it goes better with a wheat or IPA beer.  Tiniest bite to it.  I think a few more months and it will mellow out.  I've got 2 more to try months from now.

So far it's been all medium.  Loosely rolled, this one is meant to deliver loads of flavorful smoke, which it does.  I guess I wish it'd slow down and strengthen.  The burn reminds me of a Fuente style smoke, easy smoking, cool, creamy and full of flavor.  Different flavor for sure, but same type of roll and smoking experience.

Starting to develop some stronger flavors of oak and nutty flavors that linger.  Not as sweet as before but more cashew and leathery tastes.  Phish has been jamming hard to Reba on my outdoor speakers.  I don't if it the music, but It's starting to kick it up a notch.  Starting to really enjoy  it now. Still wish it'd slow down so I can really enjoy it.  More nutty flavors coming out.  No bite at all now, smooth, creamy, with strong walnut taste.

Definitely a great smoke.  Toro is not a small cigar, but I guess if I buy more, I'm going to choose the biggest one for my smoking style.  I want over an hour before the last inch, which I'm coming up on in only 45 minutes.

Still medium and building slightly enough to keep it interesting.  Adding some spiciness now.  Seems it wants to climax, but too quick.  Great  aftertaste with many flavors, roasted nuts and dried fruit, leather and spice lingering on your tongue.

Almost gone, still burning cool.  Feeling it slightly, but wishing for more.  I'd say this is more if a quick weekday late night smoke.  Hoping for more on a Saturday night.

Couldn't get an entire hour, but was great delivering many flavors and always was smooth and refined.  It finished right as Widespread Panic's Me and the Devil started.  If could go 15 more minutes and smoke through til the end of this song, man, I'd probably rate it 2 to 3 points higher.  It'd be the perfect southern jam band smoke. But it still is a great smoke.  Even to the nub, left a great nutty flavor.  Overall, very delightful in flavor, just wishing for more.

Overall: 90

Flavor 92, complexity 93, burn 93, experience 90, value 88.

  1. Yeah, this is BigAl and I'm going to add to my review. I'm smoking my 2nd smoke, it's been 6 months since last smoking so maybe these have aged a little.

Great flavors of cedar and aged wood throughout the first half. Smooth, clouds of smoke, and great flavors of cedar and nuttiness with now some dried fruit. Still all medium throughout. Maybe more flavor now. But, still smoking pretty fast.

For the price, I'd like it to slow down and transition more. But, it has Overall great flavors and is so smooth and delightful. I mean, I gave it a 90. If you're looking for a quick 40 minute smoke that is one of the best medium flavored smokes, then this is your cigar.

I'm getting to the last 2 inches and I'm thoroughly enjoying all of it, but I'm already thinking I'm about to be short handed.

Don't get me wrong. It is great. But, I can name many short smokes for the same price that deliver great tastes, plus complexities that develop into very intriguing flavors. I don't think this one is trying to do that. It is straight forward and all around good, but, for the price, should do a little more.

I'm liking it a lot. Might up it to a 91. But still ain't as good as a La Flor Dominica double ligero for similar price. This one may have better flavors but lacks in complexity and finish.

Overall a fine smoke, but not box worthy. But I still look forward to smoking more and worth the price. Yeah, it's a 91. You be the judge.
