Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Toro Review
Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Toro Cigar Review
11/5/2022
This is my 2nd Southern Draw cigar that I've ever smoked. Check out my review of the first one from October 22nd. These are from a sampler pack that cost me $7 - $8 a cigar.
This one has an oily dark broadleaf wrapper from Pennsylvania. Yes, that what I said. Not Connecticut. USA Maduro binder and Nicaraguan fillers. This one again is made with AJ Fernandez and Robert Holt, the owner.
Usually I age new cigars a few months, but from what I've read, these can be smoked immediately. I got not even a month on these.
A few minutes in and this one seems a little stronger than the SD Firethorn I previously smoked. That one was medium throughout. This one starts out similar, a little dry with some roughness, but building subdle flavors. Easy draw and lots of smoke on the 65 degree 100% humidity night. No fire tonight, wood is too damp and 65 is nice.
Slightest run that I touch up. Pepper is definitely coming out and I think I taste the Maduro binder with some dark chocolate and leather. One inch in and not bad. Dropped the ash a little early with no cone formed. Might could use a little more age. I got 2 more, so. But no harshness, pulling plenty of smooth medium plus flavors.
Now picking up some dried fruit, like cranberry with different pepper flavors on top. Smoking slower than the Firethorn. Still a little dry. Let me take a quick break and wrinse my palate with what may be my final shot of bourbon and coke for the night. I'm gonna let Frank Zappa The Gumbo Variations jam on without me.
Seems to have smoothed out some, with a little cedar on top of more dried fruit. More medium now. Burning perfect. Now taste slight citrus.
Read it has some ligero, which I'm feeling some relaxation on this late Saturday night. Alllman Bros Stormy Monday fits the mood perfectly for this southern heritage cigar. I think the music makes it taste better now. Changing to more deeper dark molasses flavor. Holding the ash better now and tasting more refined. My palate has less dryness and more creamy flavors of fruity dark toffee. Not really sweet, but subdle black tea flavors. If you've ever drank the real Chinese black teas that come in the dried "plates" then you know what I'm talking about (you can only get in China). It's definitely kicking in the strength.
Got about an hour in and it is very satisfying. Even more dried fruit flavors. Clouds of smoke now and getting stronger. Full flavored now. Very interesting cigar. To me, the last half is much better than the first half. Much smoother and can taste the deep flavors better now. I think I'll wait a few more months until smoking the next one and I bet it is even better.
It's not kicking my ass, but now a strong full bodied smoke. To me this cigar is like a strong black tea flavor with pepper on top.
Finishes strong and smooth. No hotness. Just more of said flavors. Look forward to smoking again.
Overall: 90
Flavor 90, complexity 93, burn 90, experience 92, value 89.
How about some Blue Angels from earlier today:
