La Aurora Corojo Churchill cigar review

La Aurora Corojo Churchill cigar review

1/18/2023

First, this is, I guess, a review for me or the few that still has some of these or still remembers these fine and cheap smokes.  I think I paid about $2.50 a piece 10 to 25 years ago and I bought a lot, maybe 30 or 40 cigars.  I have about 10 left and I still enjoy them.

These are huge cigars, but mild and easy smoking. I think the Corojo was the strongest blend.  It's an equadorian Corojo with Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers.  Probably a Dominican binder as these were mainly Dominican cigars made in La Aurora's oldest factory.  The Corojo has become one of my favs recently, but was my least fav during this time.  I love the sweetness of today's Corojo, but the 15 year ago Corojo is totally different.  It was spicy, harsh, and bitter.  Let's see if 15 years can say I was wrong...

First inch is pretty mild.  I can definitely taste the Corojo, just as I remember, a bitter spiciness that I can only describe as bitter.  It's not bad, as the cigar is mild, but it's like a mild and smooth cigar with a bitter overtone, which ruins it.  I remember I wouldn't buy any Corojo cigar for like 10 to 15 years, until I tried the Kristoff Corojo and I, let me look, oh yeah, I gave it a 95 for flavor.  Wow, what a 180 degree reverse!  Well, lesson learned, the wrapper name is just a name and means nothing, at least over time.  I wish someone would read these reviews and school us on the history of the Corojo wrapper, because I don't know shit.  I only know what I know from what I've experienced  and my experience with 15 Corojo is the same.

Don't discount LA Aurora.  The other blends are great and this one ain't bad, just not great.  I think it's trying to highlight the strength of the Nicaraguan fillers and, for a low priced option, just didn't pan out.  Maybe in a few weeks I'll review the Connecticut or the Cameroon wrapped version, which are quite good.

But, it's smoking great, no touch ups and has decent flavors.  I mean, I paid like $2.50 for it, so I should just shut up and smoke it.  A great fishing or golfing cigar.  I mean, I am tasting some slight sweetness of spicy anise or baking spices.  Some may actually really enjoy this one.  I do taste earthiness and leather under sweet spice.  It ain't harsh, not creamy, but becoming more medium to full in flavor.  A tad harshness, but overall satisfying.  It's definitely complex.

That's why reviews are subjective.  I guarantee that at least 5% of reviewers would rate this one very high.  If you like the earthy, spicy, raw tobacco taste of this one, with the smooth draw, they'd rate it high.  I think this one is good, but it seems it's missing a core element of smoothness.

I admit some of the smoother Dominican cigars have a papery taste that is missing the raw tobacco flavors of a fine cigar.  This one is trying to go into the raw Nicaraguan flavors, but is not refined.

Enough analytics.  It's an alright smoke.  That's why I love cigars.  Every cigar delivers different nuances and you have to find ones you like.  That's why I try to break it down.   Too bad most reviewers just try to get hits and help sell new products.

Like I stated, this review was for my entertainment.  If you have one of these, smoke it and see if I'm wrong.  I'm a huge La Aurora fan and I want more of their cigars.  They are the oldest factory, I think I the world, so give them some respect, even for $2.50 smoke.

Wow.  This one is now full bodied and flavored.  Slightly harsh, but delivering all the flavors of a fine Nicaraguan, just not all refined.  If you can find one of these, I'd love to know if my review is accurate.  After 15 years, it's as mellow as it can get.  That's why I buy a lot and hold them to see their full potential.  It's a testimate to the blender and roller.  I think they achieved the max with this blend.

A fine blend and roll.  15 years later and it is giving all its got.  Very complex and intriguing.

Overall: 88

Flavor 87, complexity 93, burn 91, experience 89, value 91.
